What is The Aurelian Saga?

The Aurelian Saga: Collage Image

I’ve spent quite a lot of time thinking about how I might describe this series, this one series that I’ve spent so much time planning. It’s been over a decade now, but still, this first, most basic question remains the question I struggle with the most.

Where do I even start?

Should I talk about the boy who lost everything, who lives in a world without hope, or a future? Or would I be better served talking about the nature of the setting? I’ve used terms like ‘cosmic horror’ and ‘dark science fiction’, checking those traits off as if they were boxes as I used them to describe the nature of the universe, until now, but the reality is far more complicated.

This is Science Fiction in the truest sense; technological growth and innovation isn’t some distant, vaguely defined plot notion, you will be able to see it happening in real time. From one book to the next, and across every page. Technology will help to define our place in the universe, and our understanding of it.

Horrifying Monsters

What is Cosmic Horror? It is the fear of that which awaits in the darkness of space. But then, the question becomes; what is the face of our enemy? Is it the mutilated, mysterious creatures that find us so early into the story? Or is there something greater at play here? There are so many mysteries waiting for us to discover, and ever more questions to match.

This is a story that will follow entire eras of the human species, a story that will stretch far into the future. The name of this first five book story arc is ‘Fallen World’, and it will be centered on a single character, but this is a story that will radically change overtime, with the passing of eras. What we see at the start, might well become totally unrecognizable to those who live in the setting in the future.

More than anything, the setting of The Aurelian Saga exists as a question—just what is the nature of our universe? And, in a world filled with darkness, in a universe consumed by unimaginable horror… what does hope look like?

Live in Canada or the United Kingdom?

A lone child in a broken world cries, wondering, "Why did they have to die?"

Their plea is only one among countless others, the many voices as innumerable as the flickering lights crowding the night’s sky. It’s a chorus of anguish, and an orchestra of sorrow; a grand melody of silent suffering that none can escape. Technological innovation abounds as the mistakes of the past haunt all those now living, leaving what remains tarnished beyond repair.

With conviction forged from a waking nightmare, and a resolve torn from the deepest, most wretched pits of despair, a pledge is made. A purpose, found.

The world will see the terrible truth... no matter the cost.

This is the story of a boy, lost and forgotten. A chronicle of life in a hostile universe, and of a cosmos trapped in a vast eternity of horror. Old dreams linger as a concealed history more ancient than the stars themselves influences fate.

As an unknowable fear awaits in the dark, a single question echoes across time, “How much are you willing to sacrifice for someone you've never met, and will never know?
